With their sweet nectar-like taste and sunny yellow flesh, ripe and juicy mangoes are the ultimate summer fruit. Believed to be native to the rainforests of the Indian subcontinent, the mango has been cultivated in South and Southeast Asia since ancient times and is the national fruit of India, Pakistan and the Philippines
Today, mangoes are grown everywhere with a warmer tropical or subtropical climate, and their flavor is known and appreciated worldwide. They can be made into desserts, added to salads and salsas, made into juices and smoothies, or simply enjoyed as a delicious fresh fruit.
What is the Ataulfo Mango and where does it come from?
Also known as honey mango, Ataulfo mango is a small, bright yellow mango named for its sweet honey flavor. It is also known for its buttery soft, non-fibrous texture that makes it ideal for blending into smoothies, lassis and sorbets. The Ataulfo has a minor size than the average, but a higher quality indeed
The Ataulfo mango comes from Mexico and is named after Ataulfo Morales Gordillo, who first cultivated it. It is believed that mangoes arrived in Mexico via Brazil, where they were brought by Portuguese travelers in the 1700s. Over the years, growers selected new varieties and the Ataulfo was developed by Gordillo in the Soconusco region of Chiapas, which has since obtained the designation of origin for the fruit
If you want to try Ataulfo mangoes, they are in season from late February to early August, and you can see them in stores marketed as honey mangoes, baby mangoes or champagne mangoes. The best way to select a ripe fruit is by smell and touch. A ripe mango will have a sweet, fragrant smell and will give a little when squeezed.
Mango in general is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, with 165g providing up to 67% of your RDA of vitamin C. It is also an excellent source of copper and vitamin A, as well as several B vitamins, some vitamin K, potassium, manganese and magnesium.
Mango is full of antioxidants, which can help protect against chronic diseases caused by free radical damage to your cells. Most mango varieties are rich in antioxidants, but one the most effective ones in nature is inherent to its botanical familiy: mangiferin, which can protect your heart from oxidative damage and lower cholesterol. Other antioxidants in mango can stop the growth of, or even kill, cancer cells, and help protect against vision loss
Mango can boost your immune system, with vitamin A to fight infection and vitamin C to help produce more white blood cells. It can also promote healthy digestion, as it contains a group of enzymes called amylases that help break down large carbohydrate molecules into sugar molecules.
Although mango is a very nutritious fruit, it is quite high in sugar. Unlike your favorite candy bar, these sugars contain a range of vitamins and minerals, so mango can be a healthy option if you are craving something sweet. As with all sweet foods, however, it should be eaten in moderation.
