Dragon fruit (Hylocereus undatus)

Pitahayas are little known to the general public, although they are very healthy. The fruit is ovoid, about 10cm. and weighs about 350gr.

Its fruit stimulates the production of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets; it is rich in vitamin A, C, B1/thiamine, B3 and B2/rivoflavin, antioxidants and minerals such as phosphorus, calcium, phosphorus, iron as well as plenty of fibre and vegetable protein. The seeds can be eaten and have beneficial fatty acids for the organism. According to various studies, it has an anti-tumour and anti-inflammatory action, promotes intestinal transit, collagen secretion and improves iron absorption.

Anecdotally, given that its natural habitat is Central America, here it lacks a pollinator, so on our farm we have to pollinate it by hand one by one at night, as the flower opens for a few hours and dies at sunrise.

To eat it, it is preferable to cut it crosswise and scoop out the pulp with a spoon. It goes very well in detox shakes and weight loss diets.
