Visiting an avocado and subtropical fruit farm: a very interesting experience for schools

Guided tour of a subtropical fruit farm in La Herradura

During this experience we will accompany you through our farm full of fruits from all over the world. Mangoes, avocados and custard apples predominate but we grow many exotic tropical fruit trees and enjoy a beautiful view of the Mediterranean Sea in a unique setting. With a bit of luck we may even see partridges, foxes and even chameleons, our very own tropical dragon.

We will be able to teach you some of the main tasks in the countryside and apply them to your school garden: watering the plants, picking fruit, taking part in tilling the soil, explaining how pruning is done, taking care of the ground cover, etc.

Dare to be a farmer for a day!

Objectives of the visit to a subtropical farm for schools:

  •     To acquire and/or reinforce the knowledge of the predominant species and their origin.
  •     To bring the pupils closer to the reality of the different crops that exist and existed in the area, with emphasis on the sugar past.
  •     To encourage respect, coexistence and participation, as well as the ability to observe and listen to the environment.
  •     To promote the ability to enjoy all the senses in the environment in which the visit takes place.
  •     To learn basic specific vocabulary.
  •     To recognise the transformations throughout history and the changes in use (traditional irrigation vs. drip irrigation) and function of the different spaces: transition from self-sufficient life to the current consumer lifestyle.
  •     Understand the need and usefulness of conserving the natural environment and the importance of food sovereignty.

How to get to our farm?

We will establish a meeting point and time at the turnoff next to the national road and we will accompany you to the entrance of the farm. The route is approximately 1400 metres on asphalt, suitable for buses (you can turn back later).
