Fruits that dogs can eat

Can my dog eat fruit?

Like humans, dogs are omnivores, which means they can eat both meat and fruit, but not just any fruit. Which fruits are good for dogs and which are dangerous?

WHAT FRUIT SHOULD I GIVE MY DOG?

Fruit, like some vegetables that are good for dogs, can be a real health boost. And when it comes to food, don't hesitate to vary the treats. This also applies to your dog, who will be delighted to try new flavours, especially if he is used to kibble and food. Don't hesitate to offer your dog a healthy and varied diet that will keep him in top form all year round. And what could be more refreshing than fruit, especially in summer? We have selected some delicious fruits that are perfect for your dog's dietary needs.

Like humans, dogs are omnivores, which means they can eat meat as well as fruit and some vegetables. Some fruits are better for them than others, and there are even some that, while safe for humans, can be dangerous for dogs

Which fruits are good for dogs?

Apples

Apples are an excellent fruit to give to your dog. Apples are a source of vitamin A, vitamin C and fibre, and they are also low in calories, making them a great snack for less active or older dogs. Apples will also help keep your dog's breath fresher and teeth clean. You can even try frozen apple slices in hot weather. However, remember to remove the seeds before giving an apple to your dog. The seeds contain a very small amount of cyanide which is best avoided, although it is not actually dangerous

Pears

Pears are a healthy snack for dogs as they are a good source of vitamin C, vitamin K and fibre. Including pears in your dog's diet may even help reduce the risk of heart attack. As with apples, remember to remove the seeds before giving a pear to your dog

Strawberries

Strawberries are high in fibre, as well as vitamin C, manganese and potassium, which help boost your dog's immune system. Strawberries also contain an enzyme that is effective in whitening teeth

Oranges

Dogs can eat oranges in moderation, as long as they are peeled, as the peel can cause stomach upset. Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, fibre and potassium, which support your dog's health.

Pineapple

Pineapples are safe for your dog as long as they are skinless. Pineapple is a fruit high in vitamins, minerals and fibre, and also contains an enzyme called bromelain that helps dogs absorb protein.

Blueberries

Blueberries are also good for your dog. Easy to feed, these berries are full of fibre and antioxidants that help prevent cell damage.

Some fruits are an excellent addition to your dog's diet for the vitamins, minerals and fibre they contain, but should only make up a small proportion of your dog's daily diet. Other fruits should not be included in your dog's diet as they can cause serious health problems

Which fruits are dangerous for dogs?

Grapes

Grapes (white or red) and sultanas should not be included in your dog's diet. Grapes are highly toxic foods for dogs and can cause severe and irreversible kidney damage.

If your dog has ingested grapes, contact a veterinarian and watch for symptoms:

  •     Vomiting and/or diarrhoea in the first two hours after eating the grapes/raisins.
  •     Loss of appetite
  •     Weakness or fatigue
  •     Shivering

In addition to grapes, other foods intended for human consumption are toxic to dogs, such as onions, mushrooms and chocolate.

The ingestion of unsuitable food is a veterinary emergency, considered as an accident, and can therefore be covered by an Agria Pet Insurance policy.
