Our family has always been closely linked to sugar cane, in fact my grandfather, Manuel Mateos Rivas, was the last sugar industrialist in Almuñécar.


Since I was a child I used to listen to his passionate anecdotes from the Santa Teresa factory, better known as the "fabriquilla" in our town.

Words such as bagasse, zafra, tachas, molasses, sugar pilé nowadays in disuse, were used on a daily basis; a whole science of how to collect, extract the guarapo, ferment it and convert it into sucrose is today unfortunately a nostalgic dream in our area.

As a tribute we planted some typical varieties of the area without thinking that they would be in such demand, so we wanted to share with you the possibility of remembering, if you have had the chance, what it was like to suck those sugar cane canes.
